This essay reviews the concept of the world hegemony of the great powers, understood as both leadership and domination, and discusses the historical emergence of the hegemonic world system with its long cycles. The essay builds on and critically appraises Wallerstein's basic insights concerning the nature and functioning of world hegemonies. For each historical period, it discusses the links between the specific form of hegemony and the international economic structure, the centennial economic model and the business, state and other institutions that characterized each form of leadership-domination. The essay ends with a brief prognosis about the future of world hegemony.
