The University Honors Program (UHP) currently serves over 800 undergraduates, spanning all class levels and majors on campus. Last year marked its twentieth anniversary. The Honors Program is a jewel on UCR’s crown, attracting smart, creative and enthusiastic young people to our campus. The program works because faculty, staff, administrators and graduate students enjoy working together with honors students. This year the UHP will continue to support and coordinate classes and events and will ask faculty to offer new classes and research projects. The UHP will continue to provide incentives for students by offering fellowship support and will implement a new selection method that will encourage creative and innovative student projects. The UHP will continue to help students to apply for prestigious scholarships.

Chris Chase-Dunn is the Director of the UHP. The UHP Director of Student Affairs is Kathryn Jones. Deanna Garrett is the Lower Division Coordinator, Emily Nudge is the Upper Division Coordinator and Mayra Jones is the Program Assistant. Christopher Schmidt is the Undergraduate research and Civic Engagement Coordinator. The UHP Executive Committee faculty members for 2008-2009 are Steve Axelrod, Robin DiMatteo, Amalia Cabezas, Timothy Close, VP Franklin, Brad Hyman, Roberto Sanchez-Rodriguez, and Debra Wong and the student members are Kathleen Norsworthy, Conrad Riddle and Sarah Shelvy. Christopher Schmitt has joined UHP as the Coordinator for Undergraduate Research and Civic Engagement.

The UHP will enhance placement of graduating students in employment, graduate schools and professional schools. UCR’s diverse undergraduate students have great opportunities to obtain advanced degrees and to move into leadership career tracks. In order to enhance the placement of our students we are studying the patterns of placement of earlier cohorts in order to improve our counseling and application assistance for admission and for prestigious scholarships and awards.

The UHP will help faculty to obtain extramural funding for employing UCR undergraduates on research projects by making opportunities known and helping with the application process (e.g. National Science Foundation (REU) grant supplements, etc.).

Four honors students will attend the annual conference of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) in Austin, Texas February 13-15, 2009. Samantha Wilson obtained a CGI grant for her proposal last year and will attend this year’s conference. Hanna Bar-Or, Danielle Wickman, and Jessica Yamane are presenting proposals for new projects.
